Noss
Noss (Spoken Word)

Noss was composed in May 2020 and won its entry into the 'Tune into Nature' competition run by Scottish National Heritage and Feis Rois. The striking scenery, sheer cliff tops and dramatic waves were the features of Noss that first inspired me to write this piece of music. However as I researched the island it was the delicate balance between room for man and room for nature and the issues of sustainability and climate change that struck me as equally important. I wanted to reflect both the outstanding beauty of the scenery and the need to protect the ecosystem at Noss. I am greatly indebted to the current wardens (Juan Brown, Jennifer Clark and Duncan Halpin) who gave me information on the island and their words are the inspiration for the voice over (Billy Kay) in the composition. They explained to me that the birds were 'a window to our oceans' and that their reduced numbers were reflecting the dangers of climate change and the need to act. The music I've composed aims to reflect this special, isolated Island, it's cliff top beauty, its soaring birds and wildlife and yet also the sadness should the delicate balance on this little piece of paradise be lost.
